1961 Jaguar MK 2 - Auction - Oceanside, CA -

This beautiful, very original, matching numbers 1961 Jaguar 3.8 Mark II Sedan is ready to be driven and enjoyed. It is in very good condition and was part of a well maintained collection. You can drive it “as is” or if you want, to make some small improvements we can take it to the next level for you. It features a period correct AM/FM push button radio, wood trim, a good newer stainless steel exhaust system with Redline classic tires and like new wire wheels. Recent mechanical check shows it has good compression and all original suspension. It is a very solid original car. The interior is all original with good body and door fit. The glass and chrome are good as well with a new windshield, and includes the original jack with the purchase.

History: The Jaguar Mark 2 is a medium-sized saloon car built from late 1959 to 1967 by the Jaguar Company in Coventry, England. Adhering to Sir William Lyons' maxim of "grace, pace and space", the Mark II was a fast and capable saloon. It came with a 120 bhp 2,483 cubic centimeters, 210 bhp 3,442 cubic centimeters or 220 bhp 3,781 cubic centimeters Jaguar XK engine. The 3.8 is similar to the unit used in the 3.8 E-Type, having the same block, crank, connecting rods and pistons but different inlet manifold and carburation (two SUs versus three on the E-Type in Europe) and therefore 30 bhp (22 kW) less. The head of the six-cylinder engine in the Mark 2 had curved ports. The 3.4- and 3.8-litre cars were fitted with twin SU HD6 carburetors. The overall appearance of the car was transformed by an increase of 18% in cabin glass area greatly improving visibility. The car was re-engineered above the waistline. Slender front pillars allowed a wider windscreen and the rear window almost wrapped around to the enlarged side windows now with the familiar Jaguar D-shape above the back door and fully chromed frames for all the side windows. The radiator grille was amended and larger side, tail and fog lamps repositioned. Inside a new heating system was supplied and ducted to the rear compartment and a new better instrument layout.

1962 Jaguar Mark 2 3.8
s/n J62P216884BW, engine no. LB 3055-8
Old English White with Biscuit Leather Interior

Jaguar’s Mark 2 can be considered one of the earliest sport sedans. Its handsome styling and sparkling performance, particularly when properly equipped, demonstrated that smaller did not necessarily mean inferior. The Mark 1 was introduced in 1956 as a small sedan to expand Jaguar’s model line and met with reasonable but not outstanding success. The styling was reworked and the mechanical specification improved for 1959 and the new variant, called the Mark 2, which was not only significantly more attractive and modern in appearance, but also proved to be extremely popular. The car was available in 2.4, 3.4, and 3.8 liter forms, with the 3.8 liter variant, essentially Jaguar’s largest engine in their smallest sedan, being a genuinely high performance car with excellent roadholding, braking, and straight line performance. Indeed, the cars proved to be quite successful in saloon car racing, and for these reasons, Mark 2s are considerably more valuable and collectible than their bigger siblings, the Mark IX, Mark X, and 420G, despite the fact that all of those cars were considerably more costly when new.

This particular car is a lovely black plate California car that was comprehensively restored at great expense in 1998-1999 by its current owners, who have had the car for about forty years. There are over $59,000 in invoices with the car for the mechanical and cosmetic renewal of the car, including paint, chrome, interior, engine, suspension, brakes, electrical system. The car was completely stripped and redone to high standards. A new stainless exhaust from Falcon was fitted, and insulation added throughout the interior including the floors and firewalls. Additionally, a later GM Hydramatic transmission was fitted, which enhances drivability. The paint and bodywork were done by Images Auto Body in Campbell, California, and the mechanical work was done by Bill Price. The car has been carefully stored and used since, having covered just 1500 miles since the restoration was completed. The car was recently serviced and a tune up performed, including bleeding the brakes, setting the timing, mixture, and adjusting the carburetors, and fitting new spark plugs and ignition rotor. A new aluminum radiator was also just installed.

The car is cosmetically excellent and still presents very freshly. The paintwork was done to high standards and is virtually unmarked, with only a small stress crack above the front grille but no other significant issues to speak of. The panels are very straight throughout and fit well, but not perfectly. The chrome is excellent overall, with no pitting and only light scratching throughout, other than on the rear bumper, which has some pitting. The lights and glazing are excellent, as are the badges and other trim.

The interior is excellent, with exceptional wood which was refinished to a high gloss on par with a piano. The leather is excellent, with only the lightest of mellowing, and the wool carpets and headliner are also excellent. The instruments, switches and controls are equally nice and the interior has a universally fresh and correct appearance. The rear picnic tables are in excellent shape as well, as are the door panels. A modern stereo has been fitted.

The engine compartment is extremely clean with polished valve covers and intake components, and spotless inner fenders. The components have been correctly refinished and the engine compartment is generally correct in appearance other than the addition of the aluminum radiator. The engine block is matching but the head has been replaced at some point. The correct generator is still in place. The trunk was thoroughly restored as well, with new paint and new upholstery, which is of the correct color and material. The spare is in place as is the jack.

This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire a beautifully and comprehensively restored Mark 2, which was obviously done as a labor of love. The car is in beautiful condition and is complete with extensive invoices from the restoration, photos from the restoration, jack, and spare.

1962 Jaguar Mk ll 3.4 to Beacham Specification

Chassis No. 178447 DN: Left Hand Drive

Ex Swiss Supplied & Title:

Dr.Greg Beacham turned his hobby of restoring Jaguar Mk II’s into a business with a global reputation. He soon appreciated that with the iconic looks of the Mk II, a market existed for a totally revised engineering package to compliment the original shape. Using the original identification of early cars the body shells were completely restored becoming indistinguishable from new. The suspension was then used from later model Jaguar saloons, namely the XJ40 which allowed the fitting of independent rear suspension. This gave the Mk II an excellent ride quality and handling to match. It also provided the Beacham Jaguars with a stance evident of a specially developed car. The interiors were again treated to special upgrades including air-conditioning and electric seats with a lot of attention being paid to detail.

Our superb Jaguar was originally produced in August 1962 and was supplied new by Claprede in Geneva, Switzerland. We understand a Geneva resident subsequently commissioned Beecham in 2008 to re-build the car in its original manufactured specification colour scheme of Opalescent Gunmetal.

Beacham Jaguars are finished to a very high standard and when originally supplied new would cost in excess of GBP 150,000.00. These Mk II’s have a very special presence and combine a rewarding modern driving experience with the enduring looks of one of Jaguars finest iconic designs. With a speedo reading of only 12,898 kilometers this Beecham Jaguar is hardly run-in.

1964 Jaguar MK 2 - Inquire - New York, NY -

Offered for sale is a complete numbers matching 1964 Jaguar Mark 2 3.8 in White with original Blue interior. This extremely original example has had little work done since the car left the factory.  This specific configuration was the “ holy grail “ of Mk. 2’s, featuring the highly sought-after left hand drive, 3.8 liter engine, four-speed Moss gearbox, overdrive and wire wheels.  If you are a collector, this is the one you want. The rare optional Reuters reclining seats put it over the top.

With only two owners since 1969, this car has only a little over 50,000 miles on the clock.  There is virtully no wear on the door panels, wood, steering wheel, pedals, or sill plates. The chrome is in incredible condition.  Virtually every bit of chrome on the car is original – just as it left the factory—and all in fantastic condition.  The car had some touchup work done to its lower half, but there are no signs of any past rust exposure.  The passenger side front jack point was replaced with a factory-correct part, but no other welding has been done on the car since it left the factory inCoventry!

The former owner of this vehicle made an effort to personally restore the car, with his primary focus being to maintain its wonderful originality.  Every effort was made to leave original components in place unless they absolutely required replacement. Such items which were replaced include the carpeting, center console trim, headliner, three pieces of exterior chrome, wire wheels, tires and exhaust; all factory-correct equipment.

The engine is exceptionally strong with excellent compression numbers on all cylinders.   All mechanical components were recently rebuilt and refurbished.  The car was put on a rotisserie in order to properly weld the jack point and also to remove the engine, driveline, and complete front and rear suspension so these components could be refurbished appropriately away from the car. This also allowed for careful detailing of the undercarriage.

It performs as a Jaguar should: tight and quiet, with excellent acceleration, reaching speeds above 80 MPH with little effort. This is a car that was made to drive beautifully, and having spent its entire life under attentive stewardship, it still does to this day.

1967 Jaguar Mark 2 3.8
s/n P224676BW, engine no LE3726-8
Old English White with Black Leather Interior

Jaguar’s Mark 2 can be considered one of the earliest sport sedans. Its handsome styling and sparkling performance, particularly when properly equipped, demonstrated that smaller did not necessarily mean inferior. The Mark 1 was introduced in 1956 as a small sedan to expand Jaguar’s model line and met with reasonable but not outstanding success. The styling was reworked and the mechanical specification improved for 1959 and the new variant, called the Mark 2, which was not only more attractive and modern in appearance, but also proved to be extremely popular. The car was available in 2.4, 3.4, and 3.8 liter forms, with the 3.8 liter variant, essentially Jaguar’s largest engine in their smallest sedan, being a genuinely high performance car with excellent roadholding, braking, and straight line performance. The technical specification was impressive, including Jaguar’s lovely twin cam inline-6 and disc brakes all round. Indeed, the cars proved to be quite successful in saloon car racing, and for these reasons, Mark 2s are considerably more valuable and collectible than their bigger siblings of the same period, the Mark IX, Mark X, and 420G, despite the fact that all of those larger cars were considerably more costly when new.

This particular car is a matching numbers example which its current owner acquired it out of an estate sale in Lafayette, CA in 2011 and set about restoring. The car was converted to a 5-speed manual transmission and fitted with rack and pinion steering. The car was cosmetically restored including new paint, new chrome, new rubber, new upholstery, new carpets, and refinished wood. The engine was not rebuilt because it displayed excellent oil pressure and was not consuming oil. The engine ancillaries were refreshed including the fitment of Pertronix electronic ignition, new fuel lines, coated exhaust manifolds, new water pump and hoses, aluminum radiator, and electric cooling fan. The suspension was freshened with new bushings and new upper and lower ball joints. New tires were installed and an alignment performed as well. Cosmetically, the car was repainted, the chrome redone, and the weather stripping replaced. Coombs competition style rear spats were also fitted. The interior was restored as well, with reupolstered front seats, door panels, arm rests, console, and kick panels. The wood was refinished and new wool carpets were fitted as well. A modern stereo was also installed.

Cosmetically, the car presents very well and is best characterized as a high level driver. The car has a good straight body with good gaps, and the car wears a very good paint job which has slight orange peel but no significant wear or issues to speak of. The chrome is very good with light surface scratches only, while the badges and trim are excellent as are the glass and lights. The car is equipped with Lucas Fogranger fog lamps.

The interior is in excellent overall condition with nice leather and carpets, both of which display great craftsmanship with correct patterns and materials. The door panels are equally nice and the wood is in good condition, with an appearance consistent with how the cars were originally delivered rather than the highly glossy finish often employed in restorations. There is no major cracking or warping to the finish or the wood itself and the workmanship of the wood restoration was done to high standards. The shift quadrant has custom markings indicating that the car is a 5-speed and showing the shift pattern, a very neat touch that looks stock. The correct wool headliner is in place and is in fine shape and all four dome lights work. The car has a nice Lecarra wood-rimmed steering wheel and the instruments and switches are excellent throughout. All instruments appear to function properly and the car is fitted with a modern high end stereo with USB input.

The engine compartment is clean and tidy, with nicely polished valve covers, intake plenum, and carburetor tops. The air cleaner housing has been chrome-plated. The car has been fitted with an aluminum radiator and the original is included with the car. The exhaust manifolds have been jet hot coated as well. The trunk is tidy and restored in appearance, and the car has a spare wire wheel and its factory jack. The undercarriage is solid and the car has a recent stainless steel exhaust.

The car runs and drives great. The engine starts easily and is well-tuned. It sounds great and is tractable and universally well-behaved, producing great noise. The transmission is a pleasure to use with excellent synchromesh and a pleasingly mechanical but not inappropriately modern feel as 5-speed conversions sometimes have. The brakes are effective and the steering is quite light but precise. The chassis and suspension are solid and control the car well, and the entire driving experience is quite harmonious and reassuring, encouraging the driver to drive the car in a spirited manner, reminding why the Mark II is often considered to be the original sport sedan.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a wonderful high quality driver Mark 2. A matching numbers example fitted with the largest engine, this car is an absolute pleasure to drive and makes a strong cosmetic impression while incorporating several thoughtful upgrades to make the car a pleasure to drive. The car has an original owner’s manual and has been fitted with year of manufacture black and yellow license plates. The car comes with a thick file of service records for work carried out during the restoration.
